POETIC SONGS THAT AWAKEN YOUR IMAGINATION

BÁRA ZMEKOVÁ INVITES YOU TO A PLACE YOU DON'T WANT TO LEAVE.

Some people calm down and even stop in their arms with medals, others long for more and even do somersaults for it, but then there are those like Bára Zmeková, who mainly keep searching and are not in a hurry. They believe that inspiration will come on its own, whether by chance, by call or otherwise. Recently, for example, during a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, in a Gothic house next to a Steinway grand piano from 1892, next to which she even slept for several months, in the ranks of the band of the famous Senegalese singer Cheikh Lô, on a Japanese tour, in Egypt or at the SXSW festival in Austin, USA, where the world's artistic elite gathers every year. By the way, her concert here was compared to a poetic dream. But we already know that from Folkovky, and we understand why the album Jediní na světě is so fragilely beautiful. She still sings her battered chanson, as she calls her songs on the border of folk, classical, jazz and electronica, in Czech and has no intention of changing that, because the unusually poetic lyrics remain the centerpiece of her work and she wants us to immerse ourselves in them as much as she does. Because: “A poem or a song – it doesn’t matter, both are like poking your finger into a crack in time and opening it. Like a place you don’t want to leave.”
She still plays the piano, which she supplements with piano and synthesizers, and has great teammates with her: drummer Viktor Dořičák and bassist Pavel Šmíd. And if you find Bára's new songs much more rhythmic than usual, look for the experience gained with Cheikh Lô, in which Pavel plays the guitar.
